Animal Assisted Activities
CANINE GOOD CITIZEN CLASSES
The Animal Rescue League of Southern RI is pleased to offer CGC (Canine Good Citizen) classes. Started in 1989, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. The CGC test is used as a foundation by the organizations that certify dogs for animal assisted activities and therapy work. Some homeowners insurance companies will give discounts for dogs that have the award, or may cover breeds that otherwise are excluded if they have passed the test. Above all, the CGC award underscores the owner’s commitment to training and supervision that make the dog a valued member of the family and community.
